An important weapon in NO Limit Holdem is the check-raise. This technique helps you steal small pots or corner aggressive players. You’ll see where you stand quickly. Your opponent will realize that you have a big hand and recognize that they’d better have one too.

If you check-raise early, it makes you look like you did not want to bet a big hand. After somebody placed a bet, you determined to reraise them, positioning yourself strongly. You’ll take down a high percentage of pots, if you recognize the late-position bet for the bluff it often is. Try to save your check raises for times when your opponent is trying to take the pot and utilize your outs at this time to maximize your chances for a better hand.

An even more effective method is to apply check raising during the next card following the flop. With this move it appears as though you intended to slow-play your hand up until they had two chances at the pot. At that point the only players likely to remain are those with exceptionally good hands. If they remain in the hand, you will realize that you are up against a pretty good hand of cards.
