The regular season opens on Thursday, September 5th when the Baltimore Ravens hit the road to take on the Denver Broncos in an 8:30 PM ET game and both teams have injuries to deal with. The Ravens have ruled out defensive tackle Arthur Jones (illness) and tight end/fullback Dennis Pitta (hip), while the Broncos seem likely to be without cornerback Champ Bailey (foot) and linebacker Von Miller (suspension).
The New York Jets will open the season with Mark Sanchez sidelined because of a shoulder injury suffered in the 4th quarter of a meaningless preseason game. West Virginia product and NFL rookie Geno Smith will get the start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 1.
Rob Gronkowski has been one of the best tight ends in the NFL for the New England Patriots but he is listed as out indefinitely as he recovers from offseason forearm surgery. The Patriots take on the Buffalo Bills and the status of safety Jairus Byrd is up in the air as he tries to recover from a foot injury.
One player who avoided the week 1 injury list is Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III who is finally ready to return after sitting out the entire preseason as he recovers from knee surgery. The Redskins will take on the Philadelphia Eagles who won’t have the services of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (leg) for a long time.
